About

In celebration of Metro Square’s 25th year Anniversary, community members are invited to participate in “Pinch It! A Ceramic Hand Building Workshop” with facilitators Sabrina Tu and Wandy Cheng. After the completion of 3 workshops, students will have a piece of ceramic they feel an affinity with and are excited to use or gift during the holiday season! The goal of the workshops is to Introduce students to the process of hand-building ceramics, registration priority goes to adult Metro Square community members who have not worked with clay prior. We encourage the development of quality skills in hand building, and are committed to guiding you with techniques and knowledge throughout the process.

A gallery exhibition will also be held in Metro Square during November to showcase students’ finished works! Everyone is welcome!

Time Commitment

In order to accommodate different schedules, we have two series of workshops available. Each series contains 3 workshops, and each workshop requires at least 2 hours of your time, with 30 additional minutes of optional working time. Facilitators will then transport the pieces to fire and glaze for them to become functional food safe-ceramics. You are committed to attending all 3 workshops once you sign up for a series!

What to Expect

Each workshop will begin with a presentation, followed by a demonstration, as well as time for students to have individual hands-on experience working with the material.

  • Workshop 1: Students will pinch a vessel on their own to be cut in half, in order to familiarize themselves with the material and to practice the motion of pinching with their fingers

  • Workshop 2: Students will hand build a desired form, and learn about surface decorating techniques

  • Workshop 3: Students will refine the final piece for fire, and apply their own surface decoration if desired. Metro Square strongly encourages students to have their masks on at all times. Facilitators would be teaching the workshops with masks.

Please understand that ceramics is a medium that is very unpredictable! Facilitators will try their best to guide students to create something they have envisioned throughout the workshops, but cannot guarantee that the outcomes will be exactly as expected at the end due to uncontrollable factors.

Fee

Registration fee is $30 per student, paid in cash on the first day of class. All materials are provided! After the completion of the series, each student will receive a $30 Metro Square voucher as a courtesy for your time and commitment.
